We’re finally just days away and the festivities are flowing nicely in the run up to Christmas. One of the best things about the festive season is being able to indulge in the yummy treats that only come out when Santa is due to visit. From pigs in blankets and mince pies to eggnog and gingerbread lattes, our taste buds are tingling at the thought of it.
Whilst we all love to indulge every once in a while, we soon begin to regret our actions a little when it comes to January and we can’t quite fit into the new pair of jeans we got for Christmas. With the January blues settling in and holidays being booked, you’ll wish you laid off the chocolates! We’ve put together 5 top tips on how to be a little healthier during the festive period so you can get a head start into the new year.
Step Away from the Buffet!
It’s easy to get carried away with your food portions at a buffet, and it’s common to put together unusual combinations – a sausage roll, a slice of ham and a breadstick anyone? Try to keep your portions small and go back to the buffet if you feel like you want some more. The chances are, if you load up your plate, you will try and eat it all even if you are full to prevent wastage.
Keep your Eye on the Prize!
Indulge as much as you like over the Christmas holidays however keep in mind what you goal is. Are you trying to lose weight or tone up for a specific event? Try not to let Christmas set you back too much by keeping your main goal in the back of your head as a little reminder for when you are tucking into ‘just one more’ piece of shortbread around the telly.
‘Tis the Season to be Jolly
Make sure your time off laughing and joking with your nearest and dearest. Laughing for 15 minutes is thought to burn between 10 and 40 calories, enough to help your lose 1lb – 4lb a year! So you best get practising those belly laughs!
Drink Plenty of Water!
Drink a glass of water before you eat anything to ensure you are actually hungry and not just dehydrated, this is will help you prevent any unnecessary calorie intake and weight gain. Also consider having a glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage during the holidays to ensure you are well hydrated and don’t wake up with a bad head in the morning.
